Hyperosmia is the condition of having greater than average ability to
smell and perceive odors. This can also translate into a heightened
detection of flavors. It is related to both
Anosmia (complete inability to smell) and
Hyposmia
(decreased ability to smell), though hyperosmia is far less common.
Hyperosmia sometimes occurs in a temporary state due to pregnancy or
drug use.
Hyperosmia is of particular relevance to those working in the sensory
field as affected individuals have a greater ability to perceive and
discriminate among flavors and odors than do average consumers. Sensory
Analysts should be aware of this condition and may need to screen
panelists prior to panel participation.
